AI for making presentations: Copilot, Gemini, Claude and Gamma
How to create a presentation with AI in minutes: outline with an assistant, slides with Copilot in PowerPoint or Gamma, and a final review so it doesn’t look generic.
What AI does well (and what it doesn’t)
AI is fast at structuring: from a topic to an outline, from a document to slides, from long text to short sentences. What it doesn’t know is what your audience cares about. If you don’t tell it, you’ll get a correct and forgettable presentation.
Step 1: outline with any assistant
Use this guide’s prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. Fix the outline before moving on to slides: changing a list is much easier than changing ten laid-out slides.
Step 2: slides
Copilot in PowerPoint
According to Microsoft Support:
- Open a new presentation and select the Copilot icon (bottom right).
- Describe the presentation you want. Copilot may ask you questions about the audience and style before generating an outline.
- Adjust the outline by chatting and, when it’s ready, ask it to generate the slides.
Official tips: if you start from a Word document, use heading styles so Copilot understands the structure; start from your organisation’s template if there is one; and it works best with Word documents under 24 MB.
Other options
- Gamma: generates presentations from text and can export to PDF, PNG and PowerPoint (.pptx), according to its help; for Google Slides, upload the PPTX.
- Claude: its free plan includes creating files, according to Anthropic’s pricing page.
Always check each tool’s free-plan limits on its official website.
Step 3: don’t let it look AI-made
- One idea per slide. Delete any point you wouldn’t defend out loud.
- Data with sources. If AI adds a figure, find it in the original source or delete it.
- Meaningful images. A real photo of your project beats a generic illustration.
- Speaker notes. Ask: “Write 40-word notes per slide, in a natural tone.”
- Rehearsal. Ask: “Give me the 5 toughest questions I could get.”
