Gemini privacy: what Google keeps and how to control it
How Gemini’s “Keep Activity” setting works, how long your conversations are kept, what human reviewers see and how to use temporary chats, according to the official Privacy Hub.
The essentials, according to Google
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Keep Activity on | Conversations and what you share are saved to your activity and may be used to improve Google services, including model training, with help from human reviewers. |
| Keep Activity off | Future conversations don’t appear in your activity and aren’t used for training unless you send feedback. They’re kept for 72 hours. |
| Temporary chat | Not used to train Google’s AI models. |
| Human review | Reviewed conversations are disconnected from your account and kept for up to 3 years. |
What you shouldn’t share
Google says so explicitly: don’t include confidential information you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see. The same goes for other people’s data. Read what data never to paste.
Connected apps
Gemini can connect to Gmail, Drive or Photos. Before turning them on, ask yourself whether Gemini really needs to read your email or photos. You can disconnect them in Connected Apps settings. Disconnecting doesn’t delete what’s already in your activity.
Watch out for answers about people
Google warns that Gemini can generate incorrect information, including about people. In the EU you can object to processing or ask for incorrect personal data to be corrected: below a response, under More > Report legal issue. More in your rights with an AI.
Frequently asked questions
If I turn off “Keep Activity”, does Google stop keeping everything?
Not quite. According to Google, those conversations are kept in your account for 72 hours to respond, process feedback and for safety.
Can people read my conversations?
Yes, with “Keep Activity” on, human reviewers may review some. Google disconnects them from your account and keeps them for up to 3 years, even if you delete your activity.
