How to create, use, edit and share Gems in Gemini, add Drive files or NotebookLM notebooks, requirements and limits.
A Gem is a custom Gemini: fixed instructions (and optional documents) you reuse for one task. Like ChatGPT custom instructions, but one assistant per task. New to Gemini? See the Gemini guide.
Create a Gem
- On a computer, go to gemini.google.com.
- Open sidebar > Gems > New Gem.
- Enter a name and instructions; you can use Use Gemini to re-write instructions.
- Optional, Knowledge > Add files: upload, add from Drive or a NotebookLM notebook.
- Save. It also appears in the mobile app and Workspace side panel.
Good to know
Drive files stay up to date; you can disable knowledge citations; Gems can be edited, deleted and shared; they don’t work with Gemini Live. Don’t upload sensitive data.
